Several months ago, a few of us from the Class of 1988 got in touch to begin planning our 20 year reunion. The few of us that were in contact probably hadn’t spoken in about that long and from the beginning shared one common goal: to plan the best reunion for our class as possible. We were all different, had led different lives but we shared a childhood and adolescence on Long Island and wanted to celebrate that time in our life 20 years ago. For some of us, that particular time in life may have been painful, quite frankly in each of our ways it probably proved to be a difficult time. However as all of us have grown into mothers, fathers, husbands, wives and the people we are now, we have probably learned that life is more complicated than that time, and though we may not want to return to that time in our lives we are now at a point where we can truly celebrate it as well as maybe make light of it.
When this committee formed, one of the first orders of business was to start a website where classmates could reconnect, if they chose, or merely post their information. Many people have been in touch and for most of us it has been a lot of fun for us to not only reconnect with old friends, but to also connect with people that we may not have been friends with 20 years ago, but have become friends with as adults because we have shared things in common over the last 20 years. For all it has been a truly enjoyable experience; connecting before the actual reunion as well as being able to take time from our chaotic adult schedules to relive a simpler time in our life.
Recently, we have had comments left in the guest book by anonymous posters (or posters with pseudonyms) who have not only begun to write unpleasant statements, but have decided to live in, what seems to be for them, an uncomfortable past. The committee has decided to delete such comments, not in an effort to infringe on someone’s First Amendment rights as we were accused (forgive us if we are wrong, but we are not sure if the First Amendment covers the rights of anonymous persons and/or persons with the pseudonym “Mr. B Hynde”) but to continue to allow this to be a pleasant experience for all. If one or a few need to relive the difficult nature of their high school experience then they are welcome (as some have) to make themselves known and to write something about it. For those who have written such statements, and they have done so without singling out any particular classmates, their honesty has been refreshing. But for those who single out classmates behind a fake name—we really do not have room for that. Therefore, we will continue to delete such comments.
